Beverly Baker: A student and observer of violence dynamics, Beverly Baker began her education as a girl with wanderlust undeterred by tales of the boogeyman. She has dodged peril and outwitted threats on the streets of major American cities, Europe, the former Eastern Bloc and Southern Africa. She has developed and taught personal safety courses for LAPD's Community Police Academy, corporations, LA's Skid Row, women’s shelters, colleges/universities, public school districts and the general public for 20 years.

Kelly Sayre:  The founder & President of The Diamond Arrow Group, teaching women situational awareness so they can move forward with confidence and live life on their own terms.

In this episode, Beverly, Kelly and I discuss:

  • How understanding the environment of where you are going helps you be prepared, and being prepared makes it easier to enjoy the experience.
  • How to avoid looking like you don’t know what you’re doing, in order to avoid the wrong kind of attention.
  • Various gadgets and tools to use for safety and peace of mind in transit.
  • Being mindful of the information most of us give out freely without thinking about it.

Key Takeaways:

  • Do your research make sure that where you're going is a good fit for you.
  • Use visual tools like Street View and internet photos so you will recognize places you need to find.
  • Do everything you can to blend in and not make yourself a target.
  • Once you’re settled in at your destination, make sure everything is in order, relax, and have fun!

"When you're planning and researching where you're going, think about ‘Does this make sense for me as a single woman to go here? Does this make sense for (my family) to go to this particular neighborhood?’ Given whatever your personal circumstances are, make sure that where you're going is a good fit for you, understand a little bit about the culture" —  Beverly Baker
