Born to Be a Badass

Jun 22, 2020

Joell is the founder of the Square Peg Foundation. She has been an equestrian since childhood and has participated in many different disciplines including racing, polo, hunting, jumping, 3 day eventing, and reining. She has worked professionally in many facets of the equestrian industry, special events, breaking and training of young horses in addition to teaching. She has taught hundreds of students to ride. She is a registered behavioral technician and she has always been passionate about changing the way people teach. She’s an advocate for alternative education and has been published nationally in equestrian publications regarding a gentler and more creative approach to teaching students and training horses. Since she started working with developmentally challenged children, Joell has been developing a unique teaching method which resonates. Her philosophy of Inspire, Guide, Challenge, and her sensitive style of instruction have helped hundreds of students to achieve important goals.

In this episode, Joell and I discuss:

  • Introducing Square Peg students to the polo world of discipline and focus, helping them feel confident, empowered, bigger, stronger, and faster.
  • Advocacy for education: utilizing different learning styles, and learning outside the classroom through exploration and movement.
  • Square Pegs birth story: A reputation as a riding teacher with patience and teaching tough to teach students, utilizing horses that were seen as “not useful” anymore.
  • Utilizing the “Horse Boy Method.” to cultivate and connect the students with the beautiful parts of themselves and to create a physical environment without as many sensory triggers issues as possible.
  • Horses respond to sensory responses and have a high level of connection. Horses will communicate with you. You just need to listen and know them.

Key Takeaways:

  • Joell’s favorite self care practice is riding horses because it kindles her passion and brings her satisfaction.
  • Joell’s best advice for young women is to be open to and be on the lookout for mentors and teachers. Be aware that they don’t always come in the form you think they should. Fail your way to success, don't dwell on screw ups; it's a waste of energy.
  • Joell believes women can develop their own power and courage by starting with intention. Journal, meditate, create a vision board, and have quiet focused time. Use your own talents and calling to do something with conviction and to bring joy and comfort to the world and others.
