Born to Be a Badass

Jun 15, 2020

Katie Toliao Hurd is a member of Blauer Tactical Systems’ Mobile Training Team, a first degree Black Belt in Krav Maga and the Program Manager of Krav Maga at Combat Sports Academy (CSA) in Dublin, CA. She held a spot on the 2009 U.S. National Muaythai team that competed at IFMA, the Muaythai World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. Katie is also a member of the Krav Maga Alliance Training Team, an MTAA Champion, a KMA Force Instructor, and was voted the Krav Maga Alliance 2017 'Instructor of the Year'.

In this episode, Katie and I discuss:

  • The importance of giving yourself grace and not pressuring yourself to be 100% all the time, and how that can open you up to more authentic experiences.
  • Training with impact reduction gear to more closely recreate possible scenarios in order to learn how to respond effectively when there is an actual threat.
  • The importance of marrying your verbal skills with your non-verbal skills and how the right mindset can help you de-escalate a situation, or help you adapt when it doesn’t.
  • Overcoming the negatives narratives women tell themselves to take charge of your own personal safety and find your inner badass.

Key Takeaways:

  • Give yourself permission to have a bad day or not have it all figured out, you may be surprised by what opens up.
  • The right mindset, confidence, and calm in tense situations can go a long way to de-escalating and avoiding violence.
  • If you can de-escalate, you should de-escalate. If you can walk away, you should walk away.
  • You don’t have to be a top athlete – anyone can be a person who can live safer, and protect themselves if they have to.

"There's something on this primal DNA deep level that makes us protectors. Maybe you haven't been able to connect with that part of yourself yet, but that's inside every single woman I've ever met. So (don’t allow) your narrative about who you are and what you're capable of prevent you from seeking out more education and skills and training and let yourself tap into that." —  Katie Toliao Hurd
